Nothing between the request and the file
A conventional site answers a request by waking a server, querying a database, assembling a page and sending it. A static site skips all four. The page was finished before anyone asked.
The files sit on a CDN, copied to edge locations worldwide. A visitor in Tampa is served from Ashburn, one in Berlin from Frankfurt, both getting a finished file. There's no origin to fall over on the day you get written about.
